Role: Project Lead, Project Facilitator, Co-Design & Implementation - pro bono.
I lived in Belmont, Auckland for a number of years, which was just up the road from Woodall Park in Devonport. Me and my friends would always ride past this dis-used piece of land next to Devonport Golf Course and always say 'How cool would it be to have a dirt jump park in there...'
Eventually, I put pen to paper and put together a proposal to take to the local board. I collaborated with my good friend Tim White who owned a reputable bike store in Auckland, and we had enough momentum and expertise to push the project through to get support from the local board. From there we gained public support, contacted local school principals for letters of support, and worked on a rough design and layout.
We worked with Auckland City Council on the final design, and although it took a few years of hard graft, thanks to the generous donations of time and energy from the community and local businesses, Devonport now has a fantastic community asset that is enjoyed by everyone, young and old.
